The measures to curb COVID-19 infections in Mallorca and Ibiza come in response to the increase in cases and the extreme risk situation.

The following alert levels are in place:

  • Mallorca, health alert level 4
  • Menorca, health alert level 3
  • Ibiza, health alert level 4
  • Formentera, health alert level 3

These levels shall be effective from 00:00 hours on 13 January 2021 until 30 January 2021.

Cafés, bars and restaurants will be suspended, but they will be able to serve take-away and home-delivered food.

Areas of large supermarkets not dedicated to essential food and hygiene products are closed.

When will the regulation be implemented?

On Wednesday 13 January, the Government of the Balearic Islands reinforces measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 infections in Mallorca. The Consell de Govern approves these restrictions, which affect catering, commercial activity and gyms.

Why is the Balearic Government strengthening measures against COVID?

The Government spokeswoman explained that these limitations respond to the unfavourable evolution of the epidemiological indicators, which place the Balearic Islands in a situation of extreme risk, and to the need to stop contagions and preserve the response capacity of the health system.

In January 2021, the island of Mallorca will be on level 4 alert with a curfew at 22.00 hours, especially to avoid activities that may cause crowds or situations in which the rules and recommendations to prevent contagion are not properly respected.

Cafés, bars and restaurants

Specifically, it has been considered appropriate and proportionate to suspend the activity of cafés, bars and restaurants, which will only be able to provide home delivery service (until 24h) and take-away food (until 22h).

Exceptions:

  • Hotel restaurants, for the exclusive use of guests staying there.
  • Restaurants and cafeterias in health centres and services, school canteens.
  • Restaurants in training centres, for the exclusive use of the staff working there.

In terms of commercial activity

Large supermarkets(shops over 700 m2 in Mallorca and 400 m2 in Ibiza) will have to remain closed, except for supermarkets, keeping the capacity at 30% of their capacity and forcing them to reduce their parking spaces to 50%.

If they share suspended activities with other activities that are not suspended, this should be clearly delineated so that the customer perceives the prohibition to buy.

Small businesses(shops over 700 m2 in Mallorca and 400 m2 in Ibiza), however, continue as before, with a 30% capacity and closing time of 20.00 hours, except for petrol stations, essential commerce (food, drinks, hygiene products, etc.), pharmacies, orthopaedics, opticians, telecommunications, hairdressers, beauticians, veterinary centres, gardening and motor vehicle sales and maintenance.

Establishments must reduce their parking capacity to 50%.

Collection of products ordered or reserved before Wednesday 13 January 2021 is permitted and home delivery is permitted.

Gymnasiums and spas are also suspended.

Cultural and leisure activities

On-site cultural activities are prohibited, with the exception of theatres, auditoriums, cinemas and circuses, with a capacity reduction of 30%. The consumption of food and drink during such activities is prohibited.

The measures will enter into force on Wednesday 13 January 2021 and will remain in force, IN PRINCIPLE, until 30 January.

At Confialia we will keep you duly informed of any new regulations that may affect your business. It is clear that the Balearic Government does not know very well what to do to stop the spread of the pandemic, we may see in the coming days any kind of decision.
